Uncle Donald Jones- 52 Weeks #9

Uncle Donald Jones aka ALEXANDER DONNELL JONES

Donald Jones born June 8, 1868, in Douglas, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

As a young man, Alexander followed his older pioneer doctor brother, Dr. EA Jones and went to Amarillo, Texas.  He worked for the Ft. Worth and Denver Railroad Company and was a telegraph operator there. In 1893, he moved to Washita County, Oklahoma. This was near the city of Cloud Chief.  He lived there until 1900. There, he was a school teacher and a deputy County Treasurer for several years.

He was married in Vernon, Texas, on February 8, 1890, to Carrie Irene Thomas.
In 1900, Mr. and Mrs. Jones moved to Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, and opened up the first general merchandise store in the town of Sweetwater.  Donald sold the store in Sweetwater and bought a general store in Sayre, of which he was owner for many years. In 1908, Uncle Donald and Aunt Carrie established the Sayre Abstract Title & Guaranty Company.  They had one child, a son, Newlin Jones.  He had one Grandchild, Gene Jones.  Sadly, before Gene had a family of his own, he died during  World War II.

Like the majority of the Jones family, Donald was a life-long Democrat.  He was elected to the House of Representatives in Oklahoma for Beckham County and served in the 13th and 14th legislatures.  He was an active member of the Methodist Church in Sayre, Oklahoma.  Uncle Donald held memberships in many organizations such as the Eastern Star, one of the first Shrine members in Oklahoma City and the Odd Fellows Lodge.

He loved hunting and fishing as most of the Jones' brothers did.  He was known for taking hunting trips into New Mexico and Colorado.  These hunting trips lasted usually up to five weeks and were done with a team of mules and a light wagon.   He loved participating in plays and other entertainment in Sayre.  He was known for a jolly spirit and enjoyed doing for others.
