Cool.  Very windy.  Went up to bank then Stanley and I went over to skate.  So many boys.  I decided to put it off until PM. Went over about 2:30- big crowd.  John Booker helped me.  Geo was over and was afraid to skate with me.  He fell once.  I told him it wouldn't do to fall twice. He looked funny at me.  I thought i made him mad.  Lucile went to Tulsa this AM with school bunch.  After supper, Dad went to rink.  I was sitting here reading and Geo came in and stayed about 30 minutes.  Then we went to the rink.  Then to the depot  and back to rink.  We didn't skate.  Stanley came up with Lucile.  She told us all about her trip.

October 1-10- Avant, Oklahoma- 1911

Avant, Oklahoma-1911

Sunday, October 1
Got up early and had breakfast.  Down at 8:30 to practice.  Went into drug store to find out what time we were going.  Geo was out.  Mel and Kizer were going in AM.  I went to SS and played songs.  Geo came about 1.  We went to Ramona.  Quite dusty.  Lots of Avant people there.  Miss Kizer (Muriel) sat in buggy with me.  Geo bummed around.  Muriel went and got a drink.  After the game, we went to the drug store.  Started to stay for supper, but decided it would make us too late.  We went to hotel to wait.  Geo went after team (of horses).  Told him to hurry but he stayed and stayed.  Finally came.  I was so frustrated- had forgotten our coats.  Had the loveliest drive, though.  Moon shining and cool and pleasant.  Mr. and Mrs. Orme and Goulands were with us.  Big show tonight but we didn't get to go- got home about 8.  Was so tired and dirty.  Cooked some supper and went to bed.  Had headache.  Could hardly sleep.  Papa had to go to 170.
The always beautiful Trixie.

Monday, October 2
Dusty again.  Cleaned up good and embroidered Juanita's dress.  Very good trade.  Went by drug store and got a cone a piece on our way home.  Got a letter from Ellery.

Same old story.  So dusty you can't see across the street.  My! Everything is dirty.  Emb. again and wrote in diary.  Went up to drug store and got a tablet about 10.  Dad was up there loafing.  Geo came here and stayed awhile.  As I started to dinner, Papa told me about Geo having a woman last night and a lot of mess.  I didn't know what to think.  Stayed at home and ironed all PM.  Papa got two calls.  Lucile went with him to Moore's.  Sprinkled rain.  Geo came down and stayed a long time.  We had quite a chat about this business.  Claridy and that bunch have framed up a big mess on us.

Monday, October 9
Some one in all day.  George came back last night.  The bunch told him so much and roasted him so that he didn't know how things were.  He came in about 4.  Store full of ladies of course.  I didn't get to talk to him.  Rather thought he would come down after supper, but nix.  Lucile and I went up street after apples.  Met him at drug store.  Just spoke and that's all.  Hardly knew what to think but knew all those men had been talking.  Mel and them went over to Merle's and had music.  Wanted us to go but we didn't.  Dad closed up real early.  Went home.  Didn't feel a bit good and couldn't sleep.  George Crouse left Sat and didn't come back so they got Simmons to take his place in the play.

Curly was in awhile and asked about Lucile but I didn't look up when she came in.  Kids had a party at Hamericks.  Byron took Eleanor Davidson.  Went to show after Babe.  Geo walked back with me.  Said Miller (his partner in the drug store) was gone and he couldn't go.  Went home rather late.  Got some candy red apples.  Kids came in about the party.  Kissing games seemed to be en vogue.

Newlin Jones 52 weeks- #12

Newlin Jones was a first-cousin to my Great-Grandmother, Trixie.  He was the only child of Donald and Carrie Jones.  Newlin was born and lived his entire life in Sayre, Oklahoma.  These are a few things that I know about him:

Newlin Jones Court Case

Graduated from OU School of Law in 1914.

Practiced Real Estate Law which makes sense since his parents owned the abstract company in Sayre, OK.

Wife Edna had nervous breakdown and was bedridden most of their marriage.

Only child and son- Eugene Jones died in WWII

Helena Mar Hill-Jones "Little Grandma" 52 weeks- #13

Helena Mar Hill is my third great-grandmother.  She was Papa Jones mother.  She was born in Wilson, Tennessee on February 8, 1841.  Her passed when she was just a young girl.  Her Mother, Levicey Donnell McMinn remarried and Helena was raised by her mother and step-dad, John "Jack" Bone. Jack died in 1838 at a fairly young age of forty-two.   Sometime after that, Levicey brought her family from Tennessee to Nacogdoches, Texas.  I would love to know the story of  twice-widowed Levicey and how she brought her children to Nacogdoches from Tennessee.

At age sixteen, Helena married George Washington Jones on June 4, 1857 in Douglass, Texas.  She and G.W. Jones had eight children. She and G.W. settled on a farm in Wise County, Texas and raised their family.

In her later years, she was known as "little Grandma" due to her small size.  After the death of her beloved husband, she moved to Waco, Texas and lived with her daughter, Mary Jones-Ewing.  Little Grandma died on November 16, 1899 in Waco.  She is buried in Crawford, Texas.

Came down early.  Cleaned up.  Minnie and Campbell fixed my Kodak.  Curly was over a long time and said he liked Lucile as well as ever.  Hare and Minnie were back in too.  Minnie left.  We cut melon and were eating it in the back yard.  Geo came in and hid from us.  Then went to track- slight wreck of freight train.  New goods came in.  We worked a long time.  Cousin Bettie, Byron and everyone came to town.  Lucile and I had lots of fun teasing each other.  Curly and George both went out with Peck and Reinharts- "watermelon stealing"????  We were all glad to get home and retire.

Friday, September 1
Marking up and putting up goods all day.  Didn't sit out in front until late.  Mama was tired and didn't come down.  After supper, cousin Bettie did.  Mr. Moore was here.  Campbell and Dessie got up a surprise party on Mary.  We all intended to go.  I went home with Cousin Bettie and changed my dress.  Curly was out in front.  He and Lucile were having a chat.  She asked him for her picture.  Everyone kept butting in.  George was in and talked awhile.  He made a date to go to Ramona on Sunday.  Kids gathered here and about 9:30 when we all started to the party, Dad said it was too late to go.  That broke the bunch as Lucile, Dessie and I were the only girls.  Didn't want to go but hated to have papa "get down on it then".

Saturday, September 2
Up early.  Took folks pictures.  Went to train.  Papa and Mama and cousins went to Collinsville.  Cleaned up store good.  Put goods up in shelves.  Geo was in several times.  I told him to get Curly to go tomorrow.  Not much trade.  Made linen buttons.  Musser and Hamrick were in.  Curly was in here but left when they came.  He and Lucile had a little talk at the back door and made up.  They are going with Geo and me tomorrow.  We had lots of fun over it.  Bunch out in front as usual.  All went to train and ate melon.  Lucile and I went to drug store and had cream.  About 10:30 we heard a shot and then three real quickly.  Dad hadn't come yet.  Scared us.  Got a letter from Ellery.

Sunday, September 3
Real hot.  We had quite a time getting off to SS- came by store.  Stanley and Mr. Moore took dinner at Landis about 1:30.   Curly and Geo came in a big rig without a top.  We went to ball game at Ramona then had some lemonade.  Left before game was over.  Had lots of fun.  Teased Geo about his girlfriend out there.  Sun went behind a cloud and it was so cool and nice.  Got home just about dark.  Lucile and I went to church.  I had to play.  Mr. Moore came home with us.
