In the diaries and photos, you may notice that the girls (Trixie and Lucile) were allowed to drive a horse and buggy, ride horses ( and at that- not sidesaddle), play outdoors in the creek, etc., play tennis, sleep late, take naps, go to college and so on. This was not widely practiced with daughters during that time. My Mimi always told me Papa Jones was very forward thinking in regard to his daughters. Most girls were only taught to do "girls tasks" of that time such as cooking, keeping house, etc.. The Jones' girls were taught to do "girls tasks"along with allowing them to do many other things that most girls didn't get to experience. He thought teaching children the art of being "independent" was very important. He and Mama Jones taught them to always cling tightly to family but to be independent enough to take care of any matters to face them. Little did he know, he was preparing her to be better equipped to raise the majority of her children alone after the tragic death of her husband, George.

Mimi always said that Papa Jones was ahead of his time as far as his views as a doctor. When it came to obstetrics he had many modern and innovative ideas. He trained Trixie as an assistant and as a midwife. She delivered many babies all over the Avant area. In the mid to late 30's women were required to stay in bed for quite a length of time after a child was born. Mimi said Papa Jones always encouraged her and her sisters to get up and get moving a few days after each of their children were born.
